The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham box.
